Area Police
Approximately fifty vehicles have been covered with what seems to be human blood in the German municipality of Hanau close to Frankfurt, police confirm police.
Cars, building surfaces and postboxes were defaced, occasionally with Nazi symbols, they reported in a statement.
Law enforcement say they were alerted late on Wednesday night, when a man noticed that a vehicle in the Lamboy area of Hanau had been smeared with a reddish-hued fluid.
The liquid had been placed in the form of a Nazi symbol, they stated.
Law enforcement then located many other smeared vehicles and building exteriors in the nearby vicinity.
Swastikas are prohibited in Germany under laws outlawing the public exhibition of symbols from the Nazi era.
Police report initial examinations indicate the substance was likely blood from a person.
"There is still no lead as to where it came from; authorities are currently not cognizant of any harm in connection with the incident," they added.
Municipal representatives said they were trying "to solve the mystery" and have asked to the residents for information.
A high-ranking official stated the incident rendered him stunned and needed to be resolved quickly.
"This act hits the center of Hanau and reawakens the pain of the extremist violent incident five years ago," he stated on online, recalling the killing of nine people by a assailant focusing on residents of foreign heritage in February 2020.
