TikTok Content Creators Driving Parallel Trade for Unlicensed Weight-Loss Drug

A shadow economy for unapproved slimming drugs is being driven by social media fitness personalities and sellers on communication apps, based on recent findings.

Investigational Treatment Acquiring Traction Online

The experimental drug, which remains in research studies, is being advertised by online personalities for its alleged fat-burning effects. Viewers are urged to contact these profiles directly for supplier links, while also obtaining promotional offers.

Thriving Commerce on Messaging Platforms

Separately, a robust market exists on Telegram, where groups with thousands of participants share “before and after” images, administration instructions and claims of rapid UK delivery. Vendors promote the drug there before redirecting buyers to WhatsApp for transactions.

Learning About Retatrutide

Retatrutide is an experimental injection developed by US drugmaker Eli Lilly. The treatment targets three intestinal hormones – GLP-1, glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide and glucagon. Preliminary studies suggest it could help individuals reduce up to 25% of their total weight. Referred to as the “triple G”, the substance is being promoted digitally as the successor to Ozempic.

Healthcare Professionals Voice Concerns

However, physicians and chemists have cautions that the distribution of what remains an unapproved medication in the United Kingdom is worrisome and could lead to individuals injecting products of unknown origin.

Some experts stated the popularity for the experimental drug could be linked to the rising price of licensed slimming products such as Mounjaro.

Legal Position and Enforcement

Marketing the unapproved drug on TikTok or messaging apps is illegal in the United Kingdom, as it is an unapproved medication that cannot be promoted or supplied for human use under the British medical regulations.

Several influencers attempt to sidestep the rules by calling to the drug as a “research chemical” or citing it as “not for human consumption”. The substance is not a restricted substance, but advertising and distribution can still breach medicines, advertising, and customer regulations, risking fines, legal action or prison.

Platform Response and Content Elimination

Based on TikTok, the platform has taken down problematic content and prohibited related keywords and search suggestions. The organization said it was committed to maintaining the service safe and investing in strengthening compliance measures.

Digital Trading Activities

Investigations also found groups with up to nine thousand participants selling retatrutide using the platform's integrated discovery tool, which operates like a online catalog. Typing “retatrutide” instantly brings up channels with thousands of users, populated with photos of weight loss, glowing reviews and step-by-step instructions for preparing or injecting at residence.

Within minutes of joining one group, a vendor posted WhatsApp details, where most transactions occur. The seller provided an instruction manual and guaranteed shipping within two days. When asked whether the product was genuine, one vendor said: “You can’t be sure.” Another provided a photo of a supposed testing documentation. Not one asked about weight, medical conditions or previous experience.

Item Information and Pricing

Inside these communities, posts show black plastic packages with postal service labels, stating to contain new batches. One communication read: “It took eight of us to load them this morning.”

Buyers can choose between dry substance containers, mixed at home with purified liquid, or ready-to-use injectors typically sold at £160 for 20 milligrams. When questioned how long a pen should be used, sellers give contradictory answers varying between a few weeks to “depends on your body”.

Service Oversight and Safety Measures

A representative for Telegram stated it actively monitored dangerous content on its platform including material that promoted the “misuse of controlled medications”. The organization noted that it removed “millions of pieces of harmful content each day”.

Medical Expert Cautions

“People are administering substances they cannot confirm. Although the science behind retatrutide is valid, these digital versions may not include what they advertise,” stated Jason Murphy, the director of pharmaceutical services at Chemist4U.

Dr Crystal Wyllie of Asda Online Doctor linked the increase in demand to current cost increases for approved slimming medications such as Mounjaro. “With costs increasing, patients are turning to online platforms. But fake treatments are extremely risky. You cannot know what’s inside or whether the conditions they were produced in was sterile,” she said.

Her team has already encountered individuals harmed by self-injection from unverified sources. “We recognize the frustration, but purchasing from Telegram or WhatsApp is gambling with your well-being,” stated Wyllie. “These substances could be contaminated or improperly measured.”

Manufacturer Position

A representative from Eli Lilly said retatrutide was in phase 3 clinical trials and had not been reviewed or authorized by any government authority anywhere in the world. “Consequently at this point no one can sell [it] for personal consumption,” they explained, noting that any item “falsely representing itself as a company experimental substance not yet authorized … may expose patients to potentially serious health risks”.
