The US central bank reduced borrowing costs on midweek, representing the second rate cut in the current year amid economic turbulence originating from the government closure and trade duties.
Move Comes at Unprecedented Time for Central Bank
The decision to cut the benchmark interest rate by a 0.25% to a span of 4% to 3.75% arrives at an extraordinary moment for the central bank. The institution has been under immense pressure to cut rates despite persistent inflation.
Fed Statement Highlights Labor Market Changes
In a announcement, the Fed said that the jobless rate had gone up but stays modest. “Job gains have decelerated,” the statement notes. “Price increases has moved up and remains somewhat elevated.”
Federal Closure Complicates Fed’s Job
The ongoing federal government shutdown, now one of the longest in American history, has also hindered the Fed’s job. Collection of key financial statistics has been suspended without a timeline as employees at the BLS are furloughed during the shutdown.
Data Gap Impacts Monetary Moves
The Federal Reserve usually studies BLS data to determine labor market conditions, including the count of new jobs created to the market and the current jobless percentage. The most recent employment data was released in the beginning of last month, before the closure, and provided a relatively bleak snapshot of the jobs market in August.
The number of positions created to the market in August was lower by more than 100,000 since the spring, and joblessness rose to four point three percent – the peak since 2021.
Private Data Indicate Continued Slowdown
Though BLS was scheduled to release September’s job market report in early October, it suspended its release once the closure began. Employment data company ADP indicated earlier this month that the private sector cut thirty-two thousand positions in last month, a sign that the job market is continuing to slow.
“Supply as well as demand for workers has fallen quite sharply,” Fed chair the Fed chairman stated recently, a trend he had previously said stems from trade and immigration measures.
Price Data Reveals Moderate Increase
Though the bureau’s jobs report has been suspended, the agency still released its inflation report for September that showed that costs are rising, although gradually. Costs increased three percent over the past twelve months, the peak since the start of the year. In April, the annual inflation rate was 2.3%, the minimum it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is 2%.
