British Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have conducted a mission with French warplanes in a coordinated attack on an subterranean weapons facility in Syrian territory used by the Islamic State group (IS), as stated by the UK's MoD.

The location, identified by intelligence, was thought to be containing munitions and bombs, the release indicated, and was situated in hills just to the north of the historic site of Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our fighter planes utilized Paveway IV guided bombs to target a number of approach shafts leading to the facility... early reports are that the objective was successfully hit," the ministry announced.

There was no sign of any harm to civilians in the strike late on Saturday and all the aircraft made a safe return, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon fighters were assisted by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

The Islamic State group - also known as ISIS - imposed jihadist rule over significant areas in Iraq and Syria prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This action underscores our UK leadership, and determination to stand shoulder to shoulder with allied nations, to eliminate any resurgence of Daesh and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the area," the British Defence Secretary the minister said.

British military aircraft have performed overwatch operations over Syrian airspace to "prevent any efforts to regroup" of IS subsequent to its defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in 2019, the MoD reported.

"I must thank the personnel of our armed forces involved in this operation for their professionalism and their valour," Healey added. "They were among numerous British personnel stationed over Christmas and New Year. This mission, to take out terrorist threats who threaten our security, shows how UK forces are ready to step up, throughout the year, protecting the UK within its borders and influential overseas."

In December, the American forces carried out what it termed a "large-scale strike" on Islamic State objectives in Syria, after an assault claimed the lives of two US servicemembers and a civilian linguist in Palmyra.

The United Nations says Islamic State still maintains between 5,000 and 7,000 combatants in Iraq and Syria.
